I’ve known Dawson for a long time and have photographed him a few times during family sessions over the years. But this time? Senior photos. And wow, getting to document this season of his life felt extra special.
We photographed Dawson’s senior session at Brenton Arboretum in Des Moines, and the fall color showed up. Golden leaves, soft light, and that calm, peaceful feel Brenton does so well — it was the perfect backdrop for a relaxed, easy-going session that felt very him.

A Senior Session That Felt Natural and Effortless
Dawson is laid-back, kind, and quietly confident, and I wanted his senior photos to reflect exactly that. No stiff posing, no forced moments — just movement, conversation, and letting things unfold naturally.
And yes… his dog joined us, and yes… he is absolutely adorable. Bringing pets into senior sessions is one of my favorite ways to make photos feel personal and fun, especially when they’re as calm and sweet as Dawson’s pup. It added such a genuine layer to the session and made everything feel even more relaxed.

Why Brenton Arboretum Is a Dream Senior Photo Location
If you’re looking for a senior photo location in Des Moines, Brenton Arboretum is one of my go-to spots — especially in the fall. One of the things I love most about Brenton is the variety. Within a single session, we can create multiple looks without ever feeling rushed.
Some of my favorite features at Brenton include:
- The iconic willow tree (forever a favorite)
- Open grassy areas with soft, dreamy light
- Hidden paths and trees that add texture and depth
- Seasonal color that photographs beautifully
That variety makes it easy to create a gallery that feels full and dynamic — perfect for seniors who want photos that don’t all look the same.

Senior Photos That Feel Like You
Whether I’m photographing seniors in Des Moines or Kansas City, my approach is always the same: I want your session to feel comfortable, fun, and completely personalized. I’ll guide you every step of the way, but I also leave space for the real moments: the smiles that happen mid-conversation, the natural movement, the personality that shows up when you’re just being yourself.
Dawson’s senior session was the perfect reminder of how meaningful these photos are. Getting to photograph someone I’ve known for years in such a big season of life is truly one of the best parts of my job.
