By Maggie | Kansas City Senior Photographer
If you’re searching for a Kansas City senior photographer, there’s a good chance you’ve had at least one of these thoughts:
“I’m awkward in photos.”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“What if I feel weird the whole time?”
First of all—you are not alone. Almost every senior I work with starts there.
And here’s the truth: feeling comfortable in front of the camera isn’t something you’re just supposed to magically know how to do. It’s something I help you get to.
Creating that comfort is a huge part of my job, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts. So let me walk you through exactly how I make that happen.

I Get to Know You Before We Even Plan
Before we even hop on a call, I send over a questionnaire.
Not a boring, checkbox situation. I’m talking about questions that actually help me understand you.
Your interests. Your style. What you love. What you don’t love. What makes you feel confident. What makes you cringe a little.
That gives me a starting point so when we do talk, I already have ideas flowing. It also helps you start thinking about what you want your session to feel like.
So by the time we’re planning? We’re not starting from zero, we’re building on something personal.

It Starts Before You Ever Step in Front of My Camera
Comfort doesn’t start at your session — it starts way before that.
Once you’ve filled out your questionnaire, we hop on a call and start dreaming up your session together—your vision, your vibe, your ideas.
We go over things like:
- Locations around Kansas City that fit your personality
- Outfit choices that feel like you
- The overall look and energy you want
This isn’t me telling you what to do. It’s collaborative. We build it together.
And here’s the magic in that: when you help create your session, you walk into it already feeling more comfortable. You’re in a place you like, wearing something you feel confident in, doing something that actually represents you.

I Will Be the Awkward One So You Don’t Have to Be
Let me just say this clearly: I am fully willing to be a little goofy if it means you relax.
I will make weird jokes. I will hype you up. I will probably do something slightly embarrassing. And it works, because the second you start laughing at me, you stop worrying about yourself.
Those real laughs? Those are the photos you end up loving the most.
You don’t need to show up knowing how to be perfect in front of the camera. You just need to show up as you and I’ll handle the rest.

You’ll Never Wonder “What Do I Do With My Hands?”
This is a big one.
A lot of seniors worry they won’t know how to pose. But I believe you shouldn’t have to.
I come into every session ready to guide you through the entire thing. I’ll give you poses, prompts, movement, everything you need so you’re never standing there thinking, “Umm… now what?”
And here’s the key: we don’t just stick to stiff poses.
I’ll suggest something, and then we adjust. We tweak it to fit you — your personality, your energy, what feels natural. That’s how we go from “posed” to “this actually feels like me.”

Bring Your People (Yes, Really)
If having someone there helps you feel more comfortable — bring them.
Your best friend? Bring them.
Your mom, dad, or guardian? Absolutely.
Someone who makes you laugh or hypes you up? Even better.
As long as it’s within reason, I’m all for it. Your session should feel fun and supportive, not intimidating.

We Can Set the Vibe With Music
Depending on the location, we can play music during your session—and it makes a bigger difference than you might think.
Your favorite playlist? Let’s do it.
Music helps you loosen up, get out of your head, and just feel the moment a little more. It turns your session into more of an experience instead of something you have to “get through.”

Every Senior Is Different—And I Meet You There
Some seniors show up ready to go, fully confident, counting down the days. Others feel nervous, unsure, maybe even a little hesitant.
Both are completely normal.
My job is to meet you exactly where you are and guide you from there. I’m not expecting you to show up a certain way—I adjust to you.
That’s why no two sessions look the same. Because no two seniors are the same.

You Don’t Have to Be “Photogenic”
You just have to be you.
I’ll help with the rest.
If you’re looking for a Kansas City senior photographer who will guide you, hype you up, make you laugh, and create a session that actually feels like you, I’d love to work together.
Because this isn’t about perfect posing or forced smiles.
It’s about creating photos where you look comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.
