There are some senior sessions where you know from the very beginning that we are going to create something a little different, and Shawn’s session was definitely one of those.
Shawn wanted his senior pictures to feel editorial, unique, and completely his own, and I was all for it. He has his own style and swagger, and he was an absolute natural in front of the camera. He took direction so well, moved easily from pose to pose, and had that kind of confidence that makes photographing someone incredibly fun.
But beyond being a natural model, Shawn is also just a genuinely kind and confident young man. I have a feeling he is going places, and I loved getting to create a senior session that felt like a reflection of who he is right now.
For his session, we explored several different sides of Kansas City, from downtown architecture and urban spaces to literary details and the greenery of Kessler Park.
The result was a gallery with a lot of personality and variety, while still feeling cohesive from beginning to end.

Creating editorial senior pictures in downtown Kansas City
We started Shawn’s senior session in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, which was the perfect place to establish the editorial feel he was looking for.
We started with a little rooftop moment, taking advantage of the architecture and city atmosphere. From there, we moved down to street level and worked with all the brick, texture, and urban details that downtown Kansas City naturally gives us.
There is something about that warm Kansas City evening light hitting brick buildings and city streets that makes an already editorial session feel even more cinematic.
Shawn was so comfortable taking direction that we could really play with different poses and angles. We weren’t just trying to find one pose that worked and repeat it. We were able to move around, experiment, and create images that felt polished and intentional.
That is one of my favorite parts of photographing seniors who are willing to trust me and just go with it.

Bringing Shawn’s love of literature into his senior photos
From downtown, we wandered toward the Kansas City Public Library, where we found some really fun architectural details to incorporate into Shawn’s session.
This was one of my favorite parts because we were able to bring something personal to the photos without making it feel forced.
There are some fantastic concrete book and book-stack sculptures around the library, and they gave us the perfect opportunity to incorporate Shawn’s love of literature into his senior portraits.
We had him pose on the books and stacks, creating images that felt very editorial while still telling us something about Shawn.
We also photographed him reading his Bible, which brought another personal layer into the session.
This is exactly the kind of thing I love when planning senior pictures. Your senior doesn’t have to hold a giant sign announcing their interests for a photo to feel personal. Sometimes it’s as simple as incorporating a place, an object, or an activity that means something to them.
Those little details can make a photo feel so much more like theirs.

Exploring Kansas City’s Garment District
From the library, we continued wandering through the Garment District, looking for more urban textures and interesting spaces.
An ivy-covered wall ended up being one of my favorite finds, and we worked in some other surrounding architecture and city details as well.
The contrast between the greenery, brick, concrete, and Shawn’s styling gave us exactly the kind of editorial energy we were after.
And this is one of the reasons I love using Kansas City as a backdrop for senior photography.
You don’t have to stay in one location to create a cohesive session. There are so many different textures, architectural details, and little pockets of the city that we can use to create completely different looks while still keeping the overall gallery connected.
For a senior who wants something a little more fashion-forward or editorial, downtown Kansas City gives us so much to work with.

Adding a completely different vibe at Kessler Park
Of course, I didn’t want Shawn’s entire gallery to be one vibe.
One of my favorite things about creating a senior session is making sure there is variety in the final gallery. Even when a senior has a very specific style or vision, we can usually find a way to add another setting that gives the images a completely different feel.
So we headed to Kessler Park for the second half of Shawn’s session.
Suddenly, we went from city streets, brick, concrete, and architecture to greenery and natural surroundings.
We photographed Shawn surrounded by the trees and greenery, and we also incorporated some of the stone architecture throughout the park.
The change in setting gave us a completely different vibe without feeling like we had suddenly started a totally different session.
And that’s exactly what I wanted.
Now Shawn has images that feel editorial and urban, and images that are softer and more natural.

Senior photography that feels like YOU
One of the biggest things I want seniors and their parents to know when they start looking for a Kansas City senior photographer is that your senior session doesn’t have to fit into one specific style.
Maybe you love the idea of traditional outdoor senior pictures.
Maybe you want something more editorial.
Maybe you’re a sneakerhead, an athlete, a musician, a book lover, an artist, a theater kid, a car person, or someone who just really loves the city.
Maybe you have no idea what you want yet.
That’s okay, too.
My job is to help you take all of those pieces and turn them into a session that feels intentional and personal.
With Shawn, we knew we wanted something stylish and editorial. From there, we were able to build in the things that mattered to him, like literature and his Bible, while choosing locations that gave us plenty of variety.
And then Shawn brought the most important part with him:
His personality.
His confidence, kindness, style, and natural ability to take direction are what made these images what they are.
The locations are fun, but the person is always the most important part of the photograph.
