If there is one thing I have learned after photographing hundreds (and hundreds!) of high school seniors, it’s this:

Your senior pictures should actually feel like YOU.

Not just the version of you who looks good standing in a pretty field at sunset (although, yes, we can absolutely do that too!). I want your senior session to tell the story of who you are right now — your interests, your personality, the things you love, the places that feel like you, and all the little pieces that make you different from everyone else.

That is exactly why I loved photographing Isabelle.

And let me tell you… this girl is a STAR in the making. Look out, world.

As a Kansas City senior photographer, one of my favorite things about an MGP Icon session is that we don’t have to squeeze an entire personality into one afternoon. We can take our time, dream up ideas, explore Kansas City, and create a senior gallery that feels completely personal.

And Isabelle’s session was the perfect example of why I love that so much.

Starting with Record Store Vibes in Westport

We kicked things off at Mills Record Company in Westport.

Because why start somewhere ordinary when you can start surrounded by records?!

The record shop gave us such a cool, effortlessly Kansas City backdrop. There was something about the music, the textures, the warm colors, and the whole atmosphere that immediately felt like Isabelle.

From there, we headed downtown to explore.

One of the best parts of photographing senior pictures in Kansas City is that there is so much variety packed into a relatively small area. We can go from historic architecture to colorful murals to gritty urban textures in just a few blocks.

And when you give me permission to wander around with you and see what we find, you better believe I’m going to take advantage of it.

A Little Downtown Kansas City Glamour

After our record store start, we headed into downtown Kansas City for a completely different side of Isabelle.

She slipped into the most perfect polka dot dress, and suddenly we were giving classic, timeless Kansas City girl with a little urban edge.

We wandered around downtown, stopping at some of my favorite spots and spending some time in front of Hotel Kansas City. The architecture, the city streets, and that gorgeous dress created such a timeless combination.

These are the images that remind me why I love photographing senior pictures in Kansas City. You can get that polished, editorial feeling while still keeping things relaxed and completely personal. A beautiful building, an interesting street corner, a little city energy — sometimes that’s all we need.

And Isabelle absolutely owned it.

There was something so effortlessly confident about this part of her session. Classy without feeling too formal, timeless without feeling boring, and still unmistakably her.

Of course, we weren’t going to stay serious for too long… because there were roller skates waiting for us next.

Roller Skates + Rooftops + Kansas City

Then came one of my favorite parts of Isabelle’s session: roller skates!

We found a rooftop and mural-filled area downtown that gave us the perfect setting to bring out another side of her personality.

This is where an Icon session really gets fun.

Instead of saying, “Okay, we have 30 minutes, let’s get through these two outfits and call it a day,” we can actually build an entire experience around your ideas.

Love roller skating? Let’s photograph it.

Play an instrument? Bring it.

Obsessed with your car? Let’s find somewhere cool to photograph it.

Love theater? Well… just wait.

Bringing Her Love of Theater to the Stage

On another day, we went to Isabelle’s high school.

And this wasn’t just another location for pretty pictures. It was a place that actually meant something to her.

We photographed her on stage and in the dressing room, incorporating her love of theater into her senior session.

I absolutely love when we can photograph seniors doing the things they genuinely love. There is a completely different energy that comes out when you’re not just posing for a picture, but you’re in a space where you feel comfortable and connected to who you are.

These are the photographs that make me think, “YES. This is HER.”

And isn’t that what senior pictures should be?

Ending at Town Topic in the Crossroads

And because apparently we weren’t done having fun yet, we had one more day and one more outfit.

This time, we headed to Town Topic in the Crossroads for some classic diner vibes.

There is something about a good diner that just works for photos. The colors, the booths, the signs, the nostalgia — and Town Topic gave us the perfect final chapter for this session.

By the time we wrapped up, we had photographed Isabelle in record stores, on city streets, on rooftops, on stage, backstage, and in a classic Kansas City diner.

And somehow, every part of it felt like the same girl.

That’s the magic.

I had SO much fun with her, and I cannot wait to see where life takes this girl.
